Queen of the South is a gripping story about drugs and cartels, intrigues within the cartels, and about Teresa Mendoza’s life, who is the Cartel Queen in the shadowy and brutal cartel world. Teresa has a nice and happy life in Mexico until her drug smuggler lover, el Guero (Jon-Michael Ecker), is killed by a drug cartel which is led by his uncle Epifanio Varga (Joaquin de Almeida). She runs away from Mexico to save her own life and seek refuge and manages to survive in the U.S in the end. Teresa works with another drug leader to have her vengeance from Epifanio Varga. Interestingly, her teammate in this goal is her target’s split wife. In Queen of the South, the more she tries the more her ambitions to take control of the cartel arises day by day. She realizes that being Queen is a very stressful situation. It will require more work and more sacrifice than she ever imagined. How Teresa climbs the steps to power reveals a woman's point of view and success in the drug dealing industry, contrary to men's perspective of women in the industry. She becomes the Queen in a violent, macho world; and she takes the risks and rewards of a life of lawlessness until her assassination in a villa.
